Kidney- and urinary stones

ESWL

Kidney stones or stones in the ureter is a common and painful disease. Previously all stones were removed surgically, yet since the eighties lithotripsy has been available, in which the stones can be crushed by shock waves and so usually go away without the need for surgery.

Checklist ESWL:

Prior to surgery

Laboratory results, x-ray for stone localization

Admission: the day of surgery

URS

In rarer circumstances, ESWL is not effective for removing stones, often due to the stones’ location. Thus, for these cases, a ureteroscopy is used to remove the stone. This minimally-invasive procedure is performed on the urethra.

Admission: the day of surgery
